Nomination & Selection Process

Books stacked on eachother

The 2018-19 academic year marks the 10-year anniversary of the UCLA Common Book program. This program embodies UCLA's spirit of working toward a just world and inspiring our students to be a catalyst for action.  Nominations are welcomed from the UCLA community as we consider all nominated texts carefully.  A committee comprised of faculty, students, and staff meet to discuss each nominated book and determine which text would best continue the legacy of our Common Book program.

Selection Process

The Common Book Selection Process is a year-long process that begins during Spring Quarter. After collecting book nominations throughout the year from the UCLA community, the FYE team convenes a selection committee comprised of students, staff, and faculty, to meet to discuss the nominations. At this meeting, the committee reviews the nominations, weighing in their thoughts and opinions using the following selection criteria:

  • Connection to Common Book goals (The Common Book allows students to share and understand diverse perspectives, build community, and critically consider their role in creating a just society.)

  • Readability

  • Relatability to incoming freshman and transfer students and the greater UCLA community

  • Encourages student engagement via programming and discussions

  • Reasonable length

  • Can potentially be integrated into classroom curriculum

During this meeting, the list of nominees is narrowed down to 3-4 options. The committee then reads these final nominations in their entirety over the summer. In late July, the group comes together again to discuss the titles they read and to make their recommendation for the year's Common Book.

Fall Quarter is spent making preparations for the Common Book and its programming, and the Common Book is distributed to students at the beginning of Winter Quarter.

Nomination Process

Every year, we request book nominations from students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members as a way of including all Bruins in keeping the True Bruin spirit alive.

Nominations for the 2019-2020 Common Book are currently open. We look forward to reviewing your submissions and discussing them with our selection committee.

In acknowledgement of UCLA's Centennial celebration, we invite you to nominate texts that pertain to the past, the current state or the future of Los Angeles.  In addition, this year we are open to receiving nominations from a range of non-printed texts, including films, television shows, art work, soundtracks, etc. to supplement the Common Book.

Please submit a nomination here.

After a series of review rounds, the selection(s) will be announced in fall 2019.
